Arthur Hayes Sells Zcash After Orchard Vulnerability, Retains Worldcoin Position

Arthur Hayes Exits Zcash Over Orchard Pool Vulnerability

Arthur Hayes, founder of Maelstrom, has announced the sale of his entire Zcash (ZEC) holding following the disclosure of a critical vulnerability in Zcash's Orchard Pool. The vulnerability, known as the Orchard Counterfeiting Vulnerability, raised concerns about the potential for undetectable creation of counterfeit ZEC, undermining confidence in the coin's monetary integrity.

Details of the Orchard Vulnerability

The issue was discovered by Taylor Hornby and disclosed to the Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL) on 29 May. The vulnerability could have allowed unlimited counterfeit ZEC to be created within the Orchard pool. While there is no evidence of exploitation, the privacy features of Zcash mean it is impossible to cryptographically prove that no counterfeiting occurred during the period the vulnerability existed.

Market Impact and Hayes' Decision

Following the disclosure, ZEC experienced a sharp selloff, dropping over 45% in 24 hours. Hayes stated that the inability to guarantee the integrity of ZEC's supply, even if exploitation is unlikely, conflicted with his privacy thesis for holding the asset. As a result, he exited his ZEC position, ending his previously publicised 'Holy Trinity' trade involving ZEC, NEAR, and HYPE.

Focus Shifts to Worldcoin and AI-Linked Assets

Hayes confirmed that Worldcoin (WLD) remains the fund's primary AI-linked holding. He cited ongoing interest in AI assets and the potential impact of major AI IPOs as reasons for maintaining this position.

Why This Matters for Solana and the UK

  • Highlights the importance of robust security and transparency in blockchain protocols, a key consideration for Solana developers and UK-based projects.
  • Underscores the reputational risks privacy coins face, relevant for UK regulators and users monitoring privacy and compliance in digital assets.
  • Reflects broader market trends towards AI-linked tokens and the need for resilient infrastructure, areas where the Solana ecosystem is actively innovating.
