Helius Acquires Light Protocol to Advance Privacy on Solana

Helius Acquires Light Protocol

Helius, a Solana infrastructure provider, has acquired Light Protocol, a company specialising in privacy and scaling solutions for the Solana blockchain. This acquisition is intended to accelerate the development of a robust zero-knowledge privacy layer on Solana, supporting private payments, encrypted balances, and confidential markets.

Light Protocol’s Contributions

Light Protocol has spent four years building privacy and scaling infrastructure for Solana. The team introduced key cryptographic primitives, such as the sol_poseidon hash function and sol_alt_bn128 operations, which underpin many privacy applications on Solana today. Their work enabled programmable privacy features before Solana natively supported them.

ZK Compression and Cost Reduction

A notable innovation from Light Protocol is ZK Compression, a framework that reduces the cost of token accounts and program-derived addresses by up to 99%. This allows developers to create rent-free tokens and integrate compressed state into zero-knowledge circuits, making onchain operations more affordable and scalable.

Privacy as a Key Blockchain Trend

The acquisition reflects a growing belief that privacy is the next major frontier for blockchain technology. Solana leaders, including Helius and co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko, have emphasised the importance of privacy for both individuals and institutions as blockchain adoption increases. While blockchains are often perceived as anonymous, most transaction data is publicly accessible, raising concerns for users who require confidentiality.

Implications for UK Users and Developers

For the UK market, this development could influence how privacy features are adopted in decentralised finance and digital asset applications. As regulatory discussions around privacy and data protection continue in the UK, advancements like these may help address compliance needs while supporting innovation on Solana.

Looking Ahead

Helius and Light Protocol plan to deliver a privacy framework that is fully composable, onchain, and open source. The long-term vision includes encrypted balances and markets, with configurable disclosure for institutional compliance. Existing users of Light Protocol’s ZK Compression will not experience service disruptions, though some legacy products will be phased out.
