Solana's Anza CEO Outlines 200ms Slot Ambitions and Agave v4.2 Upgrade

Solana Targets Faster Slot Times

Solana’s current slot times are approximately 400 milliseconds. Brennan Watt, CEO of Anza—the engineering firm behind the Agave validator client—has revealed plans to reduce this to 200 milliseconds as part of the Agave v4.2 upgrade. This change would allow the network to process and confirm transactions at double the current speed.

Understanding Slot Times and Network Speed

A slot functions as a metronome tick for the blockchain, determining when new blocks can be produced. Faster slot times mean transactions are included and confirmed more quickly. For comparison, Ethereum operates on 12-second slots, making Solana’s current and proposed speeds notably faster.

Agave v4.2 and Infrastructure Optimisation

Agave v4.0, launched in May 2026, marked a significant step in client diversity for Solana. Anza’s independent development of Agave, a fork of the original Solana Labs software, is part of a broader push for performance improvements. Notably, Turbine retransmit latency has already been reduced from 600ms to 0.8ms using XDP enhancements.

Consensus and Vote Transaction Changes

Alongside slot time reductions, the Alpenglow consensus initiative aims for approximately 150-millisecond finality and proposes removing on-chain vote transactions. Currently, these votes consume significant block space and inflate transaction counts, a point of criticism among observers. Their removal would improve network efficiency and provide more transparent throughput metrics.

Why This Matters for the UK

Performance upgrades like these are relevant for UK-based developers, investors, and enterprises considering Solana for high-speed, cost-efficient applications. Enhanced efficiency and transparency could support adoption in the UK’s growing blockchain sector, including London’s fintech ecosystem.
