Solana news: SBI Holdings Acquires Bitbank, Expanding Regulated Crypto Presence

SBI Holdings Finalises Bitbank Acquisition
Japan’s SBI Holdings has agreed to acquire full control of crypto exchange Bitbank in a deal valued at 46.7 billion yen (approximately $289 million). This transaction, expected to close by October pending regulatory approval, will create Japan’s largest crypto exchange by assets under custody and account numbers.
Details of the Acquisition
SBI’s subsidiary, SBICAH, will purchase shares from Bitbank’s CEO and other shareholders, followed by a third-party share allotment. Bitbank will then buy back shares from MIXI and Ceres, resulting in SBI’s 100% indirect ownership. The combined entity, including SBI VC Trade, will manage about 1.1 trillion yen in assets and nearly 2.92 million crypto accounts.
Stablecoins and Tokenised Assets
The acquisition enhances SBI’s distribution channels for stablecoins and tokenised assets. Recently, SBI and Startale Group launched Strium, a layer-1 blockchain for trading tokenised equities and real-world assets. Additionally, SBI Shinsei Trust Bank issued the yen-pegged stablecoin JPYSC, initially available within SBI VC Trade accounts, with broader blockchain circulation planned after regulatory adjustments.
Regulatory Context and Market Impact
Japan’s regulatory framework for digital assets continues to evolve, with SBI and Ripple also launching the dollar-backed Ripple USD (RLUSD) stablecoin for institutional and retail customers. These developments underscore the growing importance of regulated digital asset platforms in major markets.
Why This Matters for Solana and the UK
SBI’s expansion in regulated digital assets, stablecoins, and tokenised products reflects trends relevant to the Solana ecosystem, particularly as UK regulators and market participants explore similar innovations. The integration of stablecoins and tokenised assets on compliant platforms may influence adoption opportunities and regulatory approaches in the UK, where Solana-based projects are actively developing real-world asset solutions.
